After our September 11 show at the Artemis in DC, I learned a few things that might help other bands preparing to play there.

The Artemis has a Behringer XR12 mixing board, which happens to be the same board I use. They also have at least three microphones, microphone stands, and a drum kit that bands may be allowed to use. The drum kit includes the shells only, so drummers will still need to bring their own cymbals and other breakables. We brought our own drum kit and microphones, so I cannot speak to the condition of the house equipment.

The owner said a of bands leave a mess so you’ll stand out if you take care of it.

The house main system is mono and accepts a single XLR connection, so there is no reason to plan a stereo mix. The venue also does not have its own monitors, so I brought ours. There are power outlets on both sides of the stage, which makes it easier to arrange amps and other equipment.

Before the show, I spent a lot of time stressing over the drum kit and planning the backline because I did not know that this equipment was already at the venue. Hopefully, sharing what I learned will make planning easier for another band. I would still recommend contacting the Artemis directly to confirm what is available and what condition everything is in before your show.

We also tried removing the ticket price and asking for tips instead. I still think the idea has potential, but I did not notice much of a difference in attendance. I think most of the people who came were already planning to see us, regardless of whether there was a ticket price. It was a useful experiment, and it reminded me that removing the cover does not automatically create a larger audience.

The owner liked the energy of the bands and invited me to organize another night there on February 12. He challenged me to put together a bill capable of bringing 50 people, and I am excited to work toward that.

I have established good relationships with Galactic Panther in Old Town Alexandria and Evening Star Café in Del Ray. They have become places where people know they can see Sable Drive, discover interesting performers, and enjoy the unusual nights we put together. I would love to develop that same kind of relationship with the Artemis and make it another dependable gathering place for adventurous local music in DC.

I am currently looking for a couple of bands that would be a good fit and could each help bring about 15 people to the February 12 show. If your band is interested in joining us and helping create some awesome, memorable nights for the local music community, please get in touch.
